Golda Sharpe
Mary Jane and Edward R. Wilson Sr. Council Scholar

Golda Sharpe is fast becoming a dynamic leader, with the help of the Women’s Council’s Leadership-Mentorship Program. “I believe that there are fewer leaders today, than years ago,” she says. “Too many people are following the wrong lead and end up on the wrong road. Developing leadership skills will help me to become more self-sufficient, along with having the knowledge to help other leaders emerge.”

That is exactly what Sharpe is doing. This economics major from Clarksdale, MS, is already helping to shape leaders of tomorrow, as she strives to become one herself. Sharpe, along with fellow Council Scholar Crystal Martin, created a group at the Boys and Girls Club of Oxford called D.I.V.A.S, which means Developing Intelligent and Vivacious Achievers. The two devote time each week to a group of 13-to-17-year old girls, helping them develop personal goals and self-esteem.

When not volunteering, Sharpe is a busy economics major, with a plan to one day help economically deprived communities and improve the quality of life for their people through public service. While pursuing this goal Sharpe is especially grateful for the support of the Women’s Council and her mentor.

“In two short years, I will graduate with a degree from the University of Mississippi. The guidance and encouraging words of my mentors have enabled me to make the necessary steps to become a better-equipped servant leader.  In addition to guiding me on my path, they  inspire me to help others find their paths.”

Sharpe believes the opportunities provided by the Women’s Council are invaluable tools to helping her grow and reach her dream of helping others.

“This scholarship is more than a sum of money to me; it is another family. I am so happy to be apart of this family and have its support,” she says. “Family is something that can not be replaced and the Ole Miss Women’s Council Family is one that I will always hold dear to my heart.  I have met so many successful and influential people in this program- my fellow scholars, our advisors, and mentors.  These people have helped me grow as a person and I would be honored to give back to this scholarship family that has given me so much!
