Joel Duff
Nancy Harrelson Stumberg Scholar

Joel Duff is someone who has been characterized on more than one occasion as “driven.” That may be an understatement. This council scholar from New Albany, MS, is not only a dedicated student with numerous activities; he is also a marathon runner. In fact, Duff has run the Chicago Marathon three times and is training to run again in October. This training requires commitment and perseverance, traits Duff utilizes every day as he studies biology and aims for a career in pediatric medicine.

As he prepares for the future, Duff says he is grateful for the opportunity to be a Women’s Council Scholar. “I feel honored to be a recipient,” he says. “It has helped enhance my college career in so many ways – through mentors and providing me with opportunities and experiences that I would not have otherwise.” Duff says he is taking full advantage of all the Women’s Council provides. He believes it will help him not only to succeed in becoming a doctor, but also to make a bigger impact on the world. “It has made me a better informed and well-rounded individual,” he says. The program also makes me aware of the importance of giving back to society and great things that may come of it.”

Duff is also learning valuable lessons in the area of leadership from the program, which he hopes will serve him well as be embarks on a career. “To succeed in the career world, it is essential to have leadership skills if you plan on making an impact,” he says. “There are many different leadership styles, but nonetheless, leadership skills are a must. Some of these skills are inherent, but others can be taught or learned, and this is a program in which leadership skills are actually practiced.”

With a hectic schedule of academics, numerous campus activities, and marathon training, Duff says he is especially grateful for his mentor, Max Miller. “I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better mentor. He is always ready to listen to me, answer any questions, and help me out if he can. It is nice to know that someone cares about you and is willing to pour into your life.”

Whether it be helping young patients in need, running marathons, or serving the community, Duff will be driving into the future with commitment and perseverance, and carrying the valuable lessons from the Ole Miss Women’s Council, he says, with him all the way.
