Gertrude Hudson Turner Council Scholar

Megan Edwards believes her experiences with the Ole Miss Women’s Council are not only enriching her life as a college student but also her future. “College is a time in your life you learn many things not only related to school, but life lessons,” she says. “This program is guiding me through those.”

Edwards is a National Merit Scholar from Water Valley, MS, majoring in mathematics and biology. She has dreams of becoming a doctor so that she can make a career out of her commitment to helping others. This busy scholar would have been attending school elsewhere if it were not for the opportunity of the Women’s Council Scholarship. “If I had not received this scholarship I would not be at Ole Miss,” she says. “I would be attending another school, for which I was already registered, but I know I would not have been as happy there.”

Edwards is enthusiastic about the incredible lessons she is learning through the Leadership-Mentorship Program. She says it has taught her that leadership is as much about becoming an inspiration as it is an instructor. “Without good leadership skills you cannot be successful because you will have no one to follow you in helping others. Success is measured by lives you touch, and if you aren’t someone people can look up to and follow then you are not successful,” she says.

In addition to lessons learned, Edwards says she is grateful for her Women’s Council mentor, who provides guidance and wisdom when it’s needed most. “Having a mentor is awesome because it leads you to understand the future and to be realistic about it,” she says. “It gives you a different outlook on life. Mrs. Patsy Bogen is my mentor. She is a wonderful lady and very thoughtful. She always cares about me and what is going on in my life. I enjoy her guidance.”
