Sarah Garrett
Lena Mitchell Marquette Scholarship

“My scholarship gives me the means to improve myself through the Women’s Council,” says Sarah Garrett. “Being able to interact with people who have similar interests in volunteering and bettering themselves helps me to have opportunities.”

Garrett, a scholar from Columbus, MS, majoring in theatre arts, finds the special opportunities in being a Council Scholar are perfect preparation for her future. From mentors and leadership training to volunteerism and friendships, Garrett is taking it all in with plans to break into show business. But don’t expect to see Garrett on the silver screen; she’s interested in running the show, not just being in it. Her goal is to produce films and manage major stage productions, and with the help of her two mentors, a theatre manager and a fundraiser on campus, she is certain she will reach her dreams. “I know I will learn a lot from them,” she says, “and I’m hoping that they may learn something from me.”

Along with her studies, Garrett is very busy with other activities. At Ole Miss, she is a member of the Ole Miss Marching Band, Trumpet Ensemble, Brass Quintet, Wind Ensemble, Sigma Alpha Iota, and the Baptist Student Union. She has also been an assistant stage manager for the Ohio Light Opera, and a stage management intern for the Berkshire Theatre Festival in Massachusetts. “I am proud to be part of the Women’s Council because they always support me in my endeavors.” Garrett says about the continued support given to her by the Women’s Council leaders.

Garrett says her experience with the Women's Council has enhanced her first two years at Ole Miss. "I always look forward to meeting with the other scholars. It’s a great atmosphere and it sets a positive tone for the rest of my week.” Garrett says one of the highlights of her week is meeting with the leaders of the Women’s Council. “It gives me a chance to check in on how I’m doing in school, and get valuable insight from three wonderful women. I have enjoyed getting to know each of them and I look forward toanother two years in the program.”
