A native of McComb, Miss., Sandra McGuire Guest, is Vice President of the University of Mississippi Foundation. Guest, who began her career at Ole Miss in 1977 also serves as secretary of the UM Foundation and played a leadership role in the Commitment to Excellence Campaign, which garnered $525.9 million for the University.
“I love the spirit of the mentorship with older and wiser adults sharing with the students and giving them a helping hand, although I’ve always thought I learned more from students I’ve helped along the way than they have from me. It gives me chills, really, to think that I was allowed the opportunity to help in some small way to give hope and encouragement to students – the most important and enjoyable part of the process.
“There are many donors who feel the same way. I can’t help but think of people like the late Dr. Lannelle Gafford who provided three Women’s Council scholarships, two during her lifetime and one through her estate. Here she was a single professional woman who lived modestly with the important goal of providing students a chance for a college education. I guess in her infinite wisdom she knew how important education is and how it changes lives forever.”
She oversees all of the UM Foundation’s publications, directs the planned and deferred giving program, serves as a trustee for the Mississippi Common Fund Trust; a member of the Joint Committee on University Investments; and a founding member of the Ole Miss Women’s Council for Philanthropy.
Guest is married to Ron Guest, director of development services. They have three children and three grandchildren.
